Of this group, RealLegal E-Transcript format is the only one that is specific to the legal industry. Since its product launch in late 1990, E Transcript has continued to gain popularity.
E-Transcript files are usually sent as a .ptx file. Opening to view these .ptx files requires downloading E-Transcript Viewer software by the recipient. E-Transcript viewer is a Free download on the RealLegal Website.
ETranscript .ptx files will not open in any other software program. However, once open utilizing E-Transcript Viewer, you can export transcripts to ASCII, PDF, as well as other file types.

ASCIIASCII format has been in use for many years. ASCII files generally appear as .txt files, that are compatible with Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, Windows text programs such as Notepad, Wordpad and Mac computers. The ASCII file is, basically, universal. ASCII files are also easily imported into legal case management software.
The ASCII file is easy to open or import, but it is actually nothing but text. Additional features only come from programs used to view it. It prints terribly when opened in programs such as Notepad.

What is a PTX file?
Session file format introduced with Pro Tools 10 digital audio workstation (DAW) software; supports audio, MIDI, and software instrument tracks, as well as effects, mixing settings, and other edits; stores references to audio files but not the audio files themselves.

File created by E-Transcript Manager, a program used for creating certified electronic transcripts; contains transcript data recorded from a courtroom hearing; most commonly used by court reporting firms when creating legal transcripts for attorneys; created to reduce the file size of emailed transcripts.
E-Transcripts may also use the '.exe' extension, which allows the transcript to be viewed from a self-contained file. However, email filters often stop the delivery of '.exe' files. For this reason, the PTX file format was created as non-executable format to more easily bypass email server filters.
PTX E-Transcripts may be converted back and forth between '.exe' E-Transcripts.
NOTE: RealLegal, the developers of the PTX format, were acquired by LiveNote and then by Thomson West. Both the West and RealLegal brands are used to advertise and sell similar software applications. The Mac version of RealLegal E-Transcript Viewer is only available for Mac OS Classic, the predecessor to Mac OS X.

A PTX file is an image saved in the V.Flash PTX raster image format. It is used to store graphics for games for the V.Flash educational gaming console released in 2006. The V.Flash PTX format consists of a header followed by the image data.
PTX files are uncommon since they are only used in games that have been discontinued. The VTech V.Flash gaming console was discontinued in 2007, a year after it was released. You most likely will only encounter a PTX file if you dump the game files from the CD in which the game is delivered.
